Are You Cherishing Sin?

I was recently listening to the testimony of Rosaria Butterfield, a reformed Presbyterian pastor’s wife who was once a lesbian and professor or women’s studies at Syracuse University. Her incredible story of transformation is riveting and a must-watch.

She said something in her presentation that stood out to me:

“When you defend your right to a particular sin, you are cherishing it.”

I’ve been thinking about that and wanted to share a few of my thoughts.

You aren’t allowed to “keep” any sin for yourself.
You can’t “cherish” or hold certain sins tight in your grasp, then pray to God and expect Him to listen to you. He wants your prayer of repentance before anything else.
Do you think God is going to bless your willing sinfulness? No! In fact He will allow you to fully reap the consequences of your choices.

The thing you must consider is the reality of your salvation if you are unwilling to let go of sin. Those who belong to Him will not continue to walk in darkness.

No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. (1 John 3:9)

If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; (1 John 1:6)

By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. (1 John 2:3, NASB)

The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; (1 John 2:4, NASB)

but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: (1 John 2:5, NASB)

the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. (1 John 2:6, NASB)

You can’t cherish sin, walk in sin, and delight in sin AND belong to Christ.

Repent, and delight yourself in Him. You won’t regret losing any former sin you once held onto so tightly.
