You may think it speaks harshly of God to say He isn’t concerned about your happiness.
But for the Christian, happiness is a by-product of holy living. Read the following verses:
How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered! How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity,
And in whose spirit there is no deceit!
How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
Who walks in His ways. When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands,
You will be happy and it will be well with you.
He who gives attention to the word will find good,
And blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.
In these verses, the word “blessed” is the Hebrew word “Asher”, which means “happy”. They are interchangeable. So go back read them, and instead, insert the word “happy”.
For the Christian, there is no happiness when we aren’t walking with the Lord and keeping His commands. Being in sin will cause turmoil and grief for believers, that will cause us to turn back to Christ in repentance.
God says, “Be holy as I am holy.”.
Nowhere does He tell us to try to find happiness. And certainly not to ”follow our hearts”!
The key to happy living is living in holiness. Being in Christ IS our happiness and our joy.
